Privacy

Auror’s software is designed to help retailers protect personal information, stay in control of their own data and meet their privacy obligations.

Auror provides retailers with a secure way to document crime in their stores

‍

The platform allows retailers to lawfully share that information in a controlled and responsible way with built-in guardrails, including with local law enforcement. We tailor the platform to help retailers comply with local privacy settings and we regularly engage with regulators across all the regions we operate in. We undertake privacy impact assessments to document and assess risks, controls and legal compliance and assist our customers in doing the same.

our privacy principles

Data minimization

Ensuring that only data that is relevant and necessary is collected by retailers using the platform.

Security, accountability and control

Ensuring any personal information is protected and secure within the platform, and only retained for as long as retailer policies and lawful purpose requirements allow.

Use and disclosure limitation

Ensuring the software has been designed with clear use and disclosure limitations to protect against scope creep and maintain public trust.

Access controlled

We provide retailers with the ability to strictly control access to their information, ensuring the right parts of their organisations see only what is needed for their jobs. Unless retailers proactively decide to share information, Auror never allows retailers to see each other's information.

Auditable

Every action any user makes on Auror is fully auditable.

Supporting data controllers

We support retailers and our law enforcement partners to meet their privacy and security obligations through a suite of self service tools, pre-configured settings and audit capabilities.

Auror helps retailers comply with privacy legislation

We assist you to ensure your collection, storage, and use of retail offender information meets today’s data and privacy compliance requirements.

Retailers stay in control

Auror generally acts as a data processor, meaning retailers determine what information they enter and remain in control of their own data. Auror acts as their agent under instruction.

Auror supports users to

  • Collect and share only necessary information relevant to protecting their stores, staff and community from harm.
  • Use information only in ways that support public safety and crime prevention.
  • Limit access to sensitive information to a closed group of authorised users and audit activity on the platform.
  • Protect information with strong security safeguards.
  • Delete information when no longer required.
  • Ensure that individuals can exercise their data access rights.

Lawful processing and collection of information

Auror modernises the information collection process and is designed with the right controls, de-identification tools and information sharing guardrails in place. Retailers have always collected information on crime and shared it with law enforcement, typically using outdated disclosure processes with poor controls and limited guardrails.

Auror enables users to process information to

  • Prevent events that may present a risk to their stores, staff or the community.
  • Identify repeat offenders and organised crime groups.
  • Notify law enforcement that an event has occurred.
  • Provide real-time alerts to other users.
  • Prosecute or otherwise take legal action in respect of an event or criminal offense.
  • Analyse crime trends and behaviors.

Responsible information sharing and disclosure

Retailers can choose which trusted parties they wish to share information with. Auror’s software limits the information a particular user can view on the basis of their role, selected preferences, and the preferences of others in their organisation.

Where Auror receives a request for personal information, we will always endeavor to redirect this request to the relevant organisation that owns that information. We do not use or disclose the personal information uploaded by our users for our own purposes.

Secure and safe storage of information

Auror’s software is hosted by Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. We adopt industry best practice to keep all data, including personal information, safe and secure. This means we encrypt all information in transit to and from Auror using SSL 256-bit encryption. The software is also securely encrypted and our sub-processors comply with industry-leading security policies and standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions

Yes, under privacy regulations in most jurisdictions, you can request your personal information from the entity that collected the information. Individuals can request their personal information from the retailer for them to make a determination about how to handle your request. It's important to note that Auror is a Software as a Service (SaaS) provider to retailers and therefore, retailers determine what information they enter and remain in control of their own data. Auror acts as their agent under their instruction, so we cannot release information directly. We provide retailers with the ability to audit, search, and download information.

Once you make a request, the retailer may require more information, such as your full name, date of birth and the time and location of the event. If necessary, you may contact privacy@auror.co for more information about this process.

Retailers generally set their own retention periods. Information may sometimes be anonymized and aggregated for statistical or reporting purposes so it is no longer personal information. Retailers cannot retain personal information for longer than they have a lawful purpose.

Yes. Auror’s privacy principles and commitment to security ensures that not only is the software compliant as a service provider, but that use of the software supports our customers’ compliance with new data protection and privacy requirements, including those set out in the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) and other relevant state legislation.

Yes. Auror’s privacy principles and commitment to security ensures that not only is the software compliant as a data processor, but that use of the software supports our customers’ compliance with EU data protection requirements, including those set out in the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as well as local data protection overlays in the markets in which we operate.  Where required, we disable certain features of the platform in some jurisdictions to comply with GDPR or local data protection requirements.

‍

Auror has built-in tools to crop and obscure any images of everyday bystanders to ensure that they are not identifiable or uploaded into the platform.

If your personal information is in Auror, it is because a retail user has uploaded that information. This could be linked to a potential crime or event involving antisocial behavior within a retailer’s store. The Auror platform is not used to track everyday shoppers.

‍

Retailers enter information in the platform about potential crime after the event has occurred in their stores.

This involves retail users completing a structured data form and attaching relevant supporting material like a witness statement, images or CCTV footage.

The structured form is designed to help retailers enter information that is relevant, accurate, and helpful to potential investigations. Free-text fields are restricted to prohibit the capturing of sensitive information such as race, ethnicity, religion, or political affiliation.

Retailers may choose to label events as sensitive to apply access restrictions. For example, if the event relates to a known minor.
