At Auror, we believe that the magic behind our mission to reduce retail crime lies in our people, the individuals who bring our purpose to life every day. One of the ways we honour their commitment and impact is by meaningfully recognising the milestones they reach along the way.
Celebrating tenure anniversaries, or as we call them, Aurorversaries, is our way of saying: you matter, and the time, energy, and heart you’ve invested in Auror is deeply valued.
Why we recognise Aurorversaries
When someone chooses to grow their career with us, it’s a big deal. They’re not just building skills or taking on new challenges; they’re helping shape our culture, strengthen our team, and move our mission forward.
That’s why we’ve recently refreshed our approach to one of our guiding principles, #makeitmagic, when recognising tenure milestones. Our goal is to:
- Celebrate contributions consistently and fairly
- Build belonging through meaningful appreciation
- Reinforce the culture and guiding principles that make Auror special
From a public shoutout to personalised gifts for major milestones, we want every Auror to feel genuinely appreciated.
As Emma Ashley, a Senior Software Engineer based in London who recently hit a five-year milestone, put it:
"Reaching five years at Auror reminds me that meaningful recognition goes beyond formal milestones - it's found in the daily support, the mentors who've guided my growth, and the colleagues who've become genuine friends. What makes tenure here special is how the company has consistently shown trust in me and invested in my journey, creating an environment where five years feels like a celebration of shared accomplishments rather than just time served.”
The science behind celebrating tenure
Beyond a kind gesture, recognising milestones is also a strategic approach grounded in research. Studies consistently show that meaningful recognition enhances engagement, reduces turnover, and fosters a sense of belonging.
- Boosting engagement: Team members who believe they'll be recognised are 2.7 times more likely to be highly engaged at work.
- Reducing turnover: Organisations with formal recognition programs experience 31% less voluntary turnover compared to those without such programs.
- Enhanced belonging: Recognition significantly boosts engagement and fosters a culture of inclusivity and belonging.
How we celebrate
While each Aurorversary is special, a few of our recognition moments stand out for the meaning behind them.
At five years, Aurors receive a personalised "Crimefighter Comic", a bespoke portrait that captures their unique impact and journey. It’s a creative, one-of-a-kind way to say: you’re a hero in our story.
At seven years, we celebrate by making a donation to a charity of the Auror's choice, honouring the spirit of giving back to the communities that we serve.
And when an Auror reaches the incredible milestone of ten years, they are gifted a handcrafted pounamu (greenstone). In Māori culture, pounamu represents mana (power, authority), prestige, and strong relationships. It’s a deeply significant way of acknowledging not just time served, but the profound impact and connection an Auror has built over a decade.
The spirit behind each celebration is the same: recognising the people who make Auror, Auror.
Steve Sarjeant, who is a Principal Software Engineer based in Australia, recently celebrated a three-year milestone and shared:
"It's easy to let time pass by without reflecting on how far you’ve come and how much your team has grown and achieved. Aurorversaries are a great opportunity to pause, take stock, and celebrate the wins along the way. Auror's unique approach also makes you feel appreciated, and the acknowledgement is something that will last a lot longer."
The impact of recognition
At the heart of it, celebrating Aurorversaries is about honouring commitment and reinforcing the community we’re building together. It’s a small but powerful way we live out our guiding principles. We recognise that when our people thrive, so does our impact.
We’re proud of every milestone, big or small, and even prouder of the people reaching them. Here’s to many more Aurorversaries ahead.
